Businesses are cracking down on student ID fraud

Businesses that offer student discounts are partnering with verification services to make sure students are legit.

Many college students wonder how long they can get away with using their student IDs to secure discounts on products and services after they graduate. Some were able to squeeze years out of their student ID benefits after receiving their college diploma, and businesses are tired of losing out on the money.

From local ice cream shops to streaming platforms and subscription services, tons of businesses offer discounts to college students. All students have to do is flash their handy dandy student ID card, and the offers and deals are theirs. It’s a sweet perk for students looking to save money.

But now, businesses are turning to companies like SheerID and UNiDAYS to verify the eligibility status of someone trying to get a student discount. They check with university registrars and use facial recognition and other indicators as part of the verification process.

And unfortunately for our recent grads, it’s saved these businesses billions.
